Pink Cloisonné Lidded Box

$95.00

A beautiful much sought after pink, antique Canton CHINA cloisonné enamel on copper box. This nice size quad-lobe box is a two-part box with half being the lid and the other being the bottom, measuring 4 ¼ x 3 × 2 1/8 - inches with the lid closed. Featuring flower vines and berries, this sweet much-loved box is most likely from the 1800's.

Please carefully view the photos. A vent hole intentionally created by the artisan during the firing process is visible at the end and at the bottom of the box. When the enamel is heated in a kiln, gasses are released from the metal base. The small hole provides a route for these gasses to escape, which prevents bubbles and cracks from forming in the finished enamel. The hole is evidence of authentic, traditional craftsmanship and is not a flaw. After the final firing and cooling, the hole may be left as is, but is also sometimes plugged and polished to match the rest of the box.

Condition for its age is good.
