Japanese Samari Pencil Box

$150.00

9 × 1 ½ x 1 ¼ - inches. A Pont à Mousson black lacquered papier-mâché box, likely from the 19th century. These boxes are known for their decorative lacquer work, often featuring intricate hand-painted scenes.

The scene depicting four figures on horseback, suggests a chase or a journey with a samurai or warrior motif. Samari were a Japanese warrior class that served feudal lords from the late 12th Century until the Meiji Restoration in the late 1870s. While the word "samurai" (侍) originated from the Chinese term wushi (武士), which described their own early warrior class, the samurai were a distinct social group with their own unique culture, practices, and code of conduct.
